No longer must you wait to be informed of what were the best albums released this year; the long awaited, highly revered Operation Manatee Music Prize is finally here!
Because I went a little nuts with this list last year, and because 2016 saw so damned many good albums compared to this year, I’ve dialed it back a bit. Instead of this year’s 100 best albums, this list will only grow as long as needed, and will likely be pared more liberally. Frankly, 2017 just didn’t have as many great releases as last year.
However, that’s not to say that there wasn’t still plenty of great music released.
The list below is ordered by artist last name or band/artist/act name, in the case of artists crazy enough to release more than one work this year (looking at you, Dear Criminals… and wft, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard?), they are listed first by act name, then by release order.
Good. That said, I give you the 2017 Operation Manatee Long List:
There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. (Cohen)
This has been a fucked up year for music. We weren’t ready for Bowie to go, we didn’t see it coming with Prince, we thought Sharon Jones had it beat… Even with the old-timers – part of me thought Leonard Cohen would make to 200, and Leon Russell would at least make it to his 80s. Despite the darkness, though, there has been so much great new music come into the world – including some by those greats we’ve lost.
That’s the thing about music though, man – and I’m trying to avoid a bad cliche, but – music will be here forever, and certainly they really do live on in each note we hear again.
It’s that show you know and love: the one that’s on every Tuesday from 11:00 to midnight, effectively making it the only live radio broadcast in Regina at that time of day: the show that not only stops wars, but rekindles the fire in marriages, reunites long-lost pen pals, finds your lost remote, buys you an eighth and brings your family dog back to life: Operation mutha fuckin Manatee!
Tune in from 11:00 to midnight for the thing that convinces you to keep living, each week. We fucking love you too.
This week, Cory and Chris talk a bit about and play tracks related to the 2013 Junos in Regina. They also manage to include a Nine Inch Nails cover by Devo.
With the Junos recently passed, we figured it might be nice to give an appropriate nod to the long-time Canadian award and music series. After fighting over which Beebs tune is the best, we pared down a few Juno-related favs that we think you’ll enjoy. We also agreed on a few ground rules including the following:
1. No Beebs tune is better than another.
2. No Beebs tune should be played on OpMan.
3. No Operation Manatee host will be able to stop the other from playing Beebs if he is away.
It wont all be about that, though. There will be a strong collection of the usual fun things. Kind of like that CD you have – you know the one – that fell behind your CD shelf and has been housing a family of spiders for the last 8 years, and you forgot it existed, but when you found it you were all like, “HOLY CRAP! I remember this! This is the best CD I ever owned! I need to listen to this RIGHT NOW or my head will explode!”
Stuff like that.
Tune in tonight from 11:00 to midnight or we will broadcast NUDE! Wait…… no.
